The Role of the Endodontist

The Role of the Endodontist

Specialist endodontic care available at our Bromley dental practice.

The word ‘endodontist’ originates from ancient Greece and is comprised of two words; ‘endo’ meaning ‘inside’ and ‘odont’ meaning ‘tooth. As can be surmised from that, an endodontist specialises in issues with the inner parts of the tooth; the most common of which is the root canal.

When this part of the tooth becomes infected with bacteria, it can not only be very painful for the patient, but can also threaten the tooth itself.

We, and our patients from Bromley of course, are fortunate in that we have a specialist in endodontics based at our practice so you can be assured that you will be in good hands.

Symptoms and diagnosis

Before a root canal procedure is performed; obviously an accurate diagnosis is needed.

Whilst any dental problems that you have should be examined by an experienced dentist at the Smile Dental Practice, there are certain symptoms which are likely to indicate the presence of an infection and, consequently, the need for root canal surgery.

Pain – Pain could be caused by a number of dental problems but should certainly not be treated, by the patient, as something which will hopefully go on its own. If the problem does lie in the root canals, it is far more likely that the pain will become more severe rather than go away.

Swelling – Swelling of the facial area may indicate the presence of an infection and advice should be sought as soon as possible.

Fever – The bacteria that causes infection in the canals can spread and lead to the patient feeling unwell in general and possible to have a fever. This should not be ignored and urgent treatment should be sought.

Sensitivity – Because the nerves are contained in the root canals of a tooth; when infected, it is not surprising that sensitivity to both hot and cold foods and drinks are more likely.

Treatment

To ensure that a root canal treatment is needed and that there are no other underlying causes, our endodontist will examine the tooth and also take x-rays to check for any signs of an abscess.

If an infection is felt to be the cause of the symptoms that you are experiencing, a root canal procedure will be necessary both to remove the symptoms, and also to ensure preservation of the tooth involved.

If you have any of these symptoms, do not ignore them, but make an appointment at the Smile Dental Practice in Bromley to see our specialist endodontist as soon as possible.
