Healthy Teeth from a Young Age

Healthy Teeth from a Young Age

Taking care of children’s teeth at the Smile Dental Practice in Bromley.

Children, as any parent will know, have a wild and vivid imagination. This plays a significant part in their development where they learn how to manage different situations.

This imagination though can also exaggerate fears; one of the more common of these perhaps being what a visit to the dentist entails.

It is likely that this is where the fear of dentists in adults stems from and ensuring that a child gets off to a good start with a dentist will probably play a major part in ensuring that they have good teeth throughout their life.

Never too young

Although your young child may not be in need of any dental care, it is still advisable to bring them along to our convenient Bromley dental practice very early on. This will allow them to become familiar with the surroundings and the various sounds that they will hear.

Because we see our role in educating young children in good oral health care as extremely important, we offer special sessions, lasting 45 minutes where we introduce them, in a child friendly manner, to many of the aspects of dental care.

This educational session will include advice on how to clean their teeth effectively as well as explaining that, whilst sweets are nice, too many of them may damage their teeth.

The session ends with an inspection by one of Smile Dental’s hygienists who may also offer a fissure sealant to help to prevent tooth decay in the child.

Parents

Parents, of course, play a major role in how their children react to certain situations. If a parent is afraid of spiders, it is likely that, for a period of time at least, so will the child be. When the parent is afraid of the dentist though, this can have a long term impact on the child’s oral health.

We know that many adults do not like visiting the dentist. Ultimately, it is their choice if they do not do so, and in turn, jeopardise their teeth.

As parents though, we surely do not want the same thing for our children? However much we help your child to understand the need for good oral health care, if they develop a similar fear of the dentist as their parents, then this puts all of the good early work at risk. Consequently if as a parent you are afraid of the dentist but still want to get your child off to the best start, why not call our friendly team to see how we can help? We can introduce you to our sympathetic care for those with dental fear and also help to guide you in the best ways to help your child too.

By doing so, you will be taking your first steps to ensure better oral health care for yourself, but for your children also, and possibly for the generations to come.
